The Big Bend Chapter Supports the Next GenerationOn September 11th 2012, the Big Bend Chapter hosted the fourth yearly joint meeting with the student chapter of Engineers without Borders (EWB) and the recently formed student chapter of the Florida Water Environment Association (FWEA) at the Florida A&M University/Florida State University (FAMU/FSU) College of Engineering. The meeting was sponsored by Heyward Inc., who provided delicious pizza and drinks for over 50 students.
The officers of the EWB student chapter presented an update of their recent activities, which included an assessment trip to the Navuso village in Fiji. The EWB chapter also gave an update about their ongoing project in the village of San Rafael, Peru. The chapter has been involved with the village for several years, and has provided assistance in projects involving water supply and sanitation. Currently the chapter is exploring the possibility of helping the villagers with the construction of a stable bridge to cross over a river. The river crossing is used daily by children going to school and villagers going to the market. Information about the chapter can be found in http://www.eng.fsu.edu/ewb/ and project ideas can be sent to ewb@eng.fsu.edu.
The FWEA Big Bend Chapter strongly believes in the importance of supporting the student organizations, which help form well rounded professionals of the future. The chapter also believes in providing opportunities for continuing education and growth to the area’s water professionals. With that in mind, the chapter will host a half day seminar on December 4th at the Hilaman Golf Course in Tallahassee. The seminar will cover innovative operational improvements topics. Interested presenters can e-mail proposed papers to Tony Holley at tholley@jsna.com. The seminar will be followed by lunch and the chapter’s first golf tournament. These events are made possible by the generous support provided by Heyward Inc., Bruce Environmental, EnviroSales of Florida, Russell Corrosion Consultants and Talquin Electric Cooperative Inc.
Future activities of the Big Bend Chapter are planned by the steering committee members. Hatch Mott MacDonald hosts and sponsors lunch meetings on the second Tuesday of February, April, June, August, October and November. These meetings take place at the Hatch Mott MacDonald office located at 1545 Raymond Diehl Road Suite 200 in Tallahassee. Anyone interested in receiving chapter information can send an e-mail to Lynne Putnam at calgal15@gmail.com in order to be included in the distribution list.
