L.L. Hedgepeth Award

This award is presented to an outstanding industrial wastewater operator. The scope of this award includes not only industrial wastewater treatment systems, but also industrial wastewater management programs. Candidate should have direct technical responsibility and not only managerial and administrative responsibilities. Pollution control is not only achieved through wastewater treatment systems, but often through in-plant controls and water management practices.
Criteria:
- Performance of the pollution control program for which the individual is responsible.
- Technical expertise.
- Complexity of the treatment system or pollution control system.
- Civic and professional involvement of the individual outside of his/her specific program.
- Membership in FWEA.
- The individuals commitment to the job.

Albert B. Herndon Award

The award is presented annually to an FWEA member who has excelled in the field of industrial pretreatment.
Criteria:
- Performance of the pretreatment system or program for which the individual is responsible.

Earle B. Phelps Awards

These awards are presented to the wastewater treatment facilities that have maintained the highest removal of pollutants.
Criteria: Nominations should include
- Previous 12 months of DEP Discharge Monitoring Reports and existing permit,
- Yearly summary sheet indicating flow-weighted monthly and annual average effluent and effluent concentrations with the associated percent removal of each parameter identified in the award criteria.
- Schematic diagram of the treatment facility illustrating principal unit operations/processess,
- Samples of daily and monthly operations reports.
Application forms must be submitted along with supporting documentation to Robert Beltran. The application forms are located at the bottom of this page.

David W. York Outstanding Reclaimed Water Customer Award

This award will recognize the customer (user of reclaimed water) who has contributed significantly to encouragement and public acceptance of water reuse. Utilities are encouraged to consider submitting a nomination for one of their customers.

This award is to recognize an individual in the reuse community who has contributed significantly to the advancement of water reuse in Florida.

David W. York Reuse Awards for Utilities

The York Awards are based on the above mentioned permitted wastewater treatment plant capacity. This award category is open to all reuse systems that provide a beneficial use of reclaimed water, including reuse systems without public access irrigation. If you have multiple wastewater treatment facilities, please submit separate applications for each, unless the reuse system is supplied by interconnected facilities. Previous winning reuse systems will not be eligible for the Reuse System of the Year award for four years. Self-nominations for the Reuse System of the Year are encouraged! The information to be used in judging the Reuse System of the Year nominations will be as indicated below with consideration that not all reuse systems will include all of these criteria:

Leroy H. Scott Award

This award is given to consider the work of wastewater treatment plant operators who are members of the FWEA and to nominate operators who made the greatest contributions to his/her fellow operators, or who did the best job in operating a plant, regardless of it's size or available equipment.
Criteria: Leroy H Scott first came to Florida as a Captain in the R&U Branch of the Corps of Engineers in 1941. His extensive knowledge of all phases of water and wastewater operations, his willingness to help others and his practical approach to solving problems, of which there were many in those hectic times, endeared him to everyone with whom he came in contact.

Samuel R. Willis Award

This award is given in recognition of Samuel R. Willis who in November 1976 risked his life to save another human being and in the process sustained personal injury.
Criteria: Any FWEA member involved in the profession of improvement of water quality is eligible.

Collection Systems Award

This award recognizes individual FWEA members and/or organizations for significant accomplishments fostering excellence in the operation and maintenance of wastewater collection systems. The award is intended to encourage utilities to provide adequate resources and excellent practices within their wastewater collection systems.
Categories include
- Utility - Recognizes a utility that represents best maintenance practices of a wastewater collection system, implements innovative programs within its wastewater collection system, provides adequate funding of the collection system for its long-term sustainability, has an excellent regulatory record, has an effective emergency response capability, promotes staff certification, shows significant improvement in the area of infiltration and inflow.
Criteria:
- Outstanding regulatory record,
- Outstanding safety record,
- Outstanding emergency response capability,
- Outstanding infiltration and inflow record,
- Outstanding documentated maintenance program,
- Collection system certification record,
- Innovative programs,
- Record of funding for long-term sustainability,
- The activity or effort must have been implemented within two years immediately prior to nomination,
- Specific programs may be nominated more than once but no more than three times,
- Potential awardees must be members of FWEA.
Submittal requirements include
- Specific reasons for nomination including a description of the value conveyed by collection system activities (one page maximum).
- One page bio of the nominee(s) or description of the organization.
- Description of the activity(ies) that qualify the individual or organization for the award.
- Any other supporting material required under criteria or that would benefit the selection process.
- Nominations will be accepted by the CSC from individuals, organizations and other groups.

Public Education Award

The award will recognize the individual FWEA members and/or organizations for significant accomplishments fostering and supporting the development of public outreach programs and integrating public education as a core element of wastewater and water utility planning and management. The award is intended to encourage utilities and other water quality organizations to incorporate public education and outreach into their operating plant, as well as to provide examples of successful public education programs and best practices.
- Individual Category - Recognizes an individual who has made a significant contribution to the public education effort, promoting awareness and understanding of water environment issues among the general public, through the development and implementation of public education programs.
- Group/Organization Category - Recognizes a group or organization, which has made a significant contribution to the public education effort, promoting awareness and understanding of water environment issues among the general public.
- Event/Campaign Category - Recognizes a single public education or outreach event or campaign, which has made a significant contribution to the public education effort, promoting awareness and understanding of water environment issues among the general public.
Criteria:
- Outstanding public education and/or outreach activities in the water environment field.
- Documented achievements and results of the nominee's public education activities.
- The activity or effort must have been implemented within two years immediately prior to nomination.
- Specific programs may be nominated more than once but no more than three times.
- Potential awardees must be members of FWEA.
Submittals
- Specific reasons for nomination including a description of the value conveyed to the public through the efforts or program of the nominee's public education activities in the water environment field (one page maximum).
- One page bio of the nominee(s) or description of the organization.
- Description of the activity(ies) that qualify the individuals or organizations for the award.
- Any other supporting documents required under criteria that would benefit the selection process.
- The use of video tapes and/or audiotapes is discouraged but must provide four copies if included in submittal which should be sent directly to the PEC.
- Nominations will be accepted by the PEC from individuals, organizations, and other groups.
- Submittals must be presented to the PEC by March 1.

Utility Management Award (Formerly OPEC)

The purpose of the award is to recognize high performing Florida wastewater utilities, promote the sharing of best practices, and to broadcast the importance of continuous quality improvement in the industry. The FWEA award is based on the Florida Sterling Council and The National Association of Clean Water Agencies
Criteria: Utility must demonstrate performance excellence in
strategic planning,
competitiveness,
organizational improvements,
communications,
employee relationships,
use of technology,
customer satisfaction,
employee rewards and recognition.

Integrated Water Resources Award
|
|
The selected recipient of the award is one who has set an extraordinary record (in Florida) of achievement in making, designing and/or implementing water resources policy in general, and the successful management of stormwater in specific, at the local and the regional levels. Documentation to demonstrate that the performance of the selected individual has been sustained over a period of time is a requirement for this award. The field of expertise of this individual and their FWEA affiliation are not deciding factors for selection.
Criteria: The nominee should preferably be an FWEA member, however, if the committee deems that a non-member is worthy of nomination, the committee will encourage the nominee to join FWEA. A year's membership in FWEA may be offered to a nominee who is not already a member of the organization. This has been done previously and is acceptable by the Integrated Water Resources Committee members.
